The house from above
La Souvigne, named after the brook which runs at the bottom of the Forgès valley, is owned and run by Ian and Jacquie Hoare. They wanted to be able to offer the highest standards of comfort while retaining the feel of being in a real Corrèze cottage, and worked for a year to modernise and restore the house. Their aim is to give their guests a real home from home during their stay. All the rooms have en suite modern thermostatically controlled showers, for example. La Souvigne is a "Gites de France" 3 épi standard Chambre d'Hôte and is regularly inspected.

Forgès is in the middle of the Souvigne valley, between Tulle, the county town of the Corrèze, and Argentat in the Dordogne valley. Seven hours from the Normandy and Brittany ports, it is very well placed to act as a staging post on the way through France. It also makes an ideal centre from which to discover a fast vanishing lifestyle. The Dordogne valley is increasingly the resort of choice for people who love France as it always has been. This is a land of small farms, trout filled streams and friendly welcoming people. Food is still taken seriously, with ingredients of wonderful quality which can be found easily. Limousin beef and veal are of worldwide fame, while Ceps from Corrèze fetch a premium price as far away as Paris or Toulouse.

This is a wonderful area to walk, cycle and ride. Being in the foothills of the Massif Central, the air is like champagne, and the nights never so hot that one stifles. There are dozens of superb sites to visit within a short distance of here. Historical oddities like the Tours de Merle, the great dams on the Dordogne, bustling markets and great châteaux abound.

Nature lovers are spoilt for things to see, with an enormously wide variety of flora and fauna in the area. Orchids grow along the roadsides, kites and buzzards patrol the butterfly filled air, and and our main worry is how to keep the wild boar out of our garden!

Ian and Jacquie Hoare left London in 1989, and set up home here because they loved the area and its people. Fluent french speakers, they would love to welcome you and to help you share in their delight in it.
